CHARLES HATFIELD (on the left) lives in Valencia, California, with his wife Michele and sons Coleman and Nick. He is an associate professor of English at Cal State University, Northridge, specializing in comics, word and image studies, children's books, youth culture, and popular culture studies. Besides California, where Charles has lived from 1977 to 1989 and again since 2001, Charles has lived in Alaska, Alabama, Texas, New Mexico, Panama (where that picture was taken), and Scotland. A twelve-year (and counting) veteran of the International Comic Arts Forum (http://www.internationalcomicartsforum.org), and the author of ALTERNATIVE COMICS (2005), he is now writing his second book, on cartoonist Jack Kirby.
CRAIG FISCHER (on the right) is an associate professor of English at Appalachian State University. He has served on the Executive Committee of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies, the editorial board of Cinema Journal, and, like Charles, the Executive Committee of the International Comic Arts Forum. His publications are many and varied. Craig, who is a good friend and a great writer, is going to tell me more about himself so that I can fill it in here!
Comics, film studies, academia, a ton of other things. Ask Craig about Buffalo and about punk. Ask Charles about art rock and being an Air Force "brat." Etc.
